Prof. Dr. Shaharum Shamsuddin
Shaharum Shamsuddin was born in Pulai Chondong, Kelantan in 1967 and received his primary education at SK Pulai Chondong and secondary education at SMK Abdul Samad Pulai Chondong and SMS Dungun, Terengganu. He obtained B. Appl. Sc (Biotechnology) from USM (1992) and MSc (Molecular Genetics) in 1996 from UPM. He completed his Doctorate in Molecular & Cellular Biology (D. Phil) from University of Oxford, United Kingdom in 2002. Professor Dr. Shaharum Shamsuddin is currently the Acting Campus Director for USM Health Campus, Kelantan. He is also currently the Coordinator of USM Initiatives on Ageing (USIA). Before this he was the Chairman of Biomedical Science Programme, School of Health Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia and the Coordinator for USM-RIKEN International Centre for Ageing Science (URICAS), He served the School of Health Sciences as the Deputy Dean for more than 5 years. Professor Shaharum was one of the three Malaysian scientists sent to Nanobiotix, France for the technology transfer of Nanotechnology in infectious disease drug delivery. He is also a Senate member of USM and Associate member for Malaysian Health Sciences Dean’s Council. Before joining USM in 2003, he was a research officer at the Veterinary Services since 1992. His fields of specialization are in molecular biology, biochemistry, gene regulation, protein-protein interaction and nanomedicine with research interests oriented towards tumor gene regulation, molecular mechanism of disease, epigenetics of ageing and molecular characterization of RNA viruses (focusing on Influenza A and SARS-CoV-2) He has guided as well as guiding many postgraduate students. He has to his credit thirteen research grants completed as the Principal investigator with more than 15 postgraduate students (MSc/PhD). Prof. Shaharum has been an external evaluator for the positions of Associate Professor and Professor for premier Universities Nationally. He also being appointed as the external evaluator for Biomedical & Biotechnology based academic programmes/postgraduate examiners at the national level. In view of his expertise, Prof. Shaharum has been a consultant for various local agencies, reviewer of many scientific journals and has many publications in peer reviewed journals at the international level.
